September numbers indicate little growth in staffing industry

Bureau of Labor and Statistics reports for September indicate temporary help employment showed little change for the month of September, according to seasonally adjusted data released last week. But staffing employment was 3.7 percent higher than September of last year, the report states.
Total U.S. nonfarm payroll employment increased by 142,000 jobs in September, seasonally adjusted and incorporating revisions from July and August, data shows monthly job gains decreased by 59,000 with monthly job gains averaging 167,000 over the last three months.
The BLS Report also indicates the unemployment rate held at 5.1 percent for September.
BLS also released preliminary August employment data for search and placement services, which increased 0.5% from July, seasonally adjusted. Search and placement jobs totaled 327,500 in August, 8.6% higher than in the same month last year.
“While job growth in the latest Fed report showed a slowdown relative to the hot pace earlier in the year, a few trends stood out,” said Keith Anderson, Managing Director of DISYS Atlanta. “College grads continue to be in hot demand, with workers holding a college degree at half 2.5 percent the unemployment rate vs. 5.1 percent for everyone else. There were fewer layoffs, and applications for unemployment are near historic lows meaning people hold full-time vs. part-time jobs. As with all jobs reports, the devil is in the details.”

Nonseasonally adjusted BLS data, which estimates the actual number of jobs in the economy, indicated temporary help employment increased 1.5 percent from August to September and year-to-year, there were 3.4 percent more staffing employees in September than in the same month last year, according to the American Staffing Association.
“The news behind the headlines is demand continues to outpace the supply of qualified candidates for staffing and recruiting firms across several industry sectors,” said Richard Wahlquist, president and chief executive officer of the American Staffing Association. “With the labor force participation rate dropping to 62.4 percent, a level not seen since September 1977, there needs to be much more focus on ensuring the American workforce has the skills needed to support U.S. growth and competitiveness in the years ahead.”
