Mobile Movement Changing Role of Both Employees, IT Professionals

Bring your own device (BYOD) is no longer a future enterprise trend, as the revolution has already reached the full-scale level. A recent Gartner study revealed that 70 percent of organizations will have implemented BYOD policies within the next 12 months.
With enterprise mobility on the rise, the role of many employees is changing as well. An InformationWeek article highlighted several ways the mobile workforce is different, including the end of the traditional 9-to-5 shift.
Another major change directly tied to BYOD is that workers are becoming geographically independent. Gary Swart, CEO of oDesk, told the news source that "nearly 30 percent of the hours billed in the United States originate offshore."
"The world is truly flat and getting flatter," Swart said. "And that is evidenced by clients who want access to talent across borders."
IT departments need to ramp up security measures
Employees and companies have found BYOD initiatives to be overwhelmingly positive, reporting such benefits as increased worker efficiency, fewer mistakes and higher morale.
However, because so many new devices are being used to access company networks, traditional cybersecurity measures are no longer adequate. Therefore, it will be essential for IT departments to adjust their security plans accordingly.
"Policies and tools initially put in place to deal with mobile devices offering consumer-grade security must be revised to deal with these devices being under the ultimate control of a private user, rather than the organization," said Dionisio Zumerle, principal research analyst at Gartner.
He advised organizations to develop separate applications that can be accessed by workers remotely. In addition, developing customized mobile solutions may help by lessening employees' likelihood of downloading malicious third-party apps.
