As Mobile Internet Gains Popularity, Solutions Become Essential for Businesses

January 24, 2013

The mobile internet has come a long way in a short amount of time, and it is on the verge of passing PC web usage – if it hasn’t already.

A recent IDC report revealed that more than 2 billion people worldwide will access the internet in 2013, more than half of whom will do so on their mobile devices. As a result, adopting mobile solutions has become crucial for companies, both to engage their customers and to make bring your own device (BYOD) easier for employees.

“In the end, consumers will demand the same level of simplicity and convenience on any device and for any service,” said Mario Morales, program vice president of semiconductors and EMS at IDC.

An earlier survey by Accenture yielded similarly positive results. According to the study, nearly 70 percent of internet users access the web daily using mobile devices, with more than 60 percent of people using their smartphones.

Mobile applications have become extremely popular as well. More than 70 percent of respondents said they downloaded at least one mobile solution, primarily entertainment apps (cited by 70 percent of respondents) or solutions that provide information like the weather or news (72 percent).
