June Employment Numbers Rise, Thanks to Strikers Returning to Work
The United States Bureau of Labor & Statistics (BLS) report for June indicates nonfarm payroll employment increased by 287,000 – after remaining virtually unchanged in May.
The report indicates Leisure and Hospitality, Healthcare and social assistance, as well as Finance added jobs over the month. But the largest jump is from the Information sector – largely reflecting the return of payroll employees who had previously been on strike.
“It is reassuring to see the numbers trending upwards after last month’s flat line,” said Curry Nichols, VP of DISYS’ HiTech Services Group. “But we have to keep in mind last month’s report indicated a large amount of workers who were actually employed, but chose not to work and go on strike. So the numbers do take on a skewed meaning.”
The report also indicates private-sector payrolls edged up .02 cents in June, following an increase of .06 cents in May. Over the past 12 months, hourly earnings have increased by 2.6 percent.
The unemployment rate in June saw a slight increase from May’s 4.7 percent to June’s number of 4.9 percent while actual number of unemployed people registered in the US increased by 347,000 to 7.8 million.
“When looking at the unemployment numbers, it is apparent these increases really offset the small declines we saw in May,” Nichols said. “This increase brings the numbers back in line with what we were seeing last year.”
The BLS report also reveals that in June, the number of those who lost their jobs or completed temporary job assignments rose by 203,000 to 3.8 million – a slight decline from May.
“We usually see temporary help and staffing firm engagements rise in the second and fourth quarter,” Nichols said. “So we are anticipating the increased use of firms such as DISYS to fill business-critical positions in the very near future.”

In a report released by the American Staffing Association, taking into account adjusted numbers for the first quarter of 2016, U.S. staffing companies employed an average of 3.08 million temporary and contract workers per week in the first quarter of 2016, up 0.3 percent from the same period in 2015. Average weekly employment this January through March was the highest for any first quarter since 2006.
Temporary and contract staffing sales totaled $30.95 billion in the first quarter of 2016—4.6 percent higher compared with the same period in 2015.
